Message from Donna Grainger, Executive Director East Kootenay Foundation for Health

CRANBROOK, BC… In a recent phone call to East Kootenay Foundation for Health, Kootenay ICE’s #11, Matt Fraser did something that most 19 year-olds wouldn’t think of…. that is create a fundraiser to raise money for the regional hospital to honour his parents and billet family.

Like many of us, Matt’s own and billet families have been impacted with health challenges and that inspired him to make a difference.

“I really appreciate all the support and encouragement I receive from my parents and billets. With some of the health difficulties both of our families are facing I really wanted to do something special for them by showing them my own support and encouragement. I knew Donna from the foundation may be able to help me out and so that is where we came up with the Shoot for the Star idea,” explains Matt.

EKFH’s 2nd annual Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care is set to launch in November. With the help of Denny’s Restaurant, Matt and EKFH are coming together to set a $5,000 fundraising goal to light a star at the regional hospital in honour of this young man’s dream of showing his support for his families.

As a kickoff to Shoot for the Star, the three will host a fundraising event at the November 20 Kootenay ICE home game. Fans coming to the rink will be able to purchase a Denny’s rocket for $5 with a chance to win one of these five prizes.

“I’m honoured that Matt would think of doing something like this for health care. It really is a testament to the amazing relationships billets form with their players. My husband and are making a donation of $100 for the Shoot for the Star and want to encourage ICE fans, other billets, the players and anyone who enjoys ICE hockey to get behind Matt’s dream,” shares Donna Grainger, Executive Director of EKFH.

The second year goal for the Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care is $85,000. A donation of $25 or more lights one bulb and for every $5,000 a Star will be lit at the front of the East Kootenay Regional Hospital for all to enjoy.
