10 Things I Think I Think

10 Things I Think I Think is a creation of SI NFL writer Peter King. His Monday Morning Quarterback articles every week are must read for all football fans at si.com. In a tribute to him, which is a nice way of saying I stole his concept, here is my 10 for this week.

1. I think the first couple of weeks has shown what most predicted and that’s the Central Division is going to be strong with no team that should run away with the title. Calgary is 4-0 and has a winning tradition by taking the Division crown the past 2 years. But expect a lot of 1-goal game whenever there is a divisional match-up.
2. I think the East will continue to be a two horse race with Brandon and Saskatoon. It’s too early to get a feeling on which of the other 4 teams might present a challenge.
3. I think it can be a huge turnaround year for Portland who could go from worst to first. A solid division, although Seattle has won one of their first five games and has a goals-against-average of 4.25.
4. I think the B.C. Division is up for grabs. Vancouver and Kelowna have owned the division for a long time and it appears Kamloops is ready to break-up that party.
5. I think it was interesting to see Brandon Sutter and Colton Gillies get sent down to the AHL. Both made the NHL at 19-years-old but are in the minors before the next season starts. The argument is always whether a player will develop quicker and better with another year in the WHL. Jordan Eberle returning to Regina is being considered a smart move for both the team and the player.
6. I think as of today the ICE and Kelowna are the only teams with an opening for an over-ager. Medicine Hat has five while Brandon, Prince George, Saskatoon, Red Deer, Spokane and Swift current each have four.
7. I think you should pay close attention to the Red Deer at Brandon game on Friday. Wheat King goalie Andrew Hayes has 3 consecutive shutouts, the WHL record is 4.
8. I think Medicine Hat will be busy the next few weeks. They still have 29 players on their roster, including five over-agers and six 16-year-olds.
9. I think the upcoming road trip for the ICE, which is six games in 10 days, is their longest trip since going to Guelph for the 2002 Memorial Cup. Over the years 7-8 days has been the longest time away from home. That’s a lot of clothes to pack.
10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) A Yankees-Dodgers World Series (Reggie Jackson-Tommy Lasorda memories) would be a great story, so would Red Sox-Dodgers (Manny returns to Fenway). Atlanta is 2 games behind Colorado for the NL Wild Card, when did that happen? Do you realize there could be a World Series game in November. Time to find those caps with ear flaps.
b) The first 4 weeks of the NFL always fly by really quickly. Games of the week for week #4 … Baltimore @ New England and on Monday Night it’s Green Bay at Minnesota (Favre’s 1st game against the Packers)
c) The NHL season opens on Thursday. It’s an Olympic year. I think more people are talking about Team Canada’s line-up than what will happen in the NHL this season.
d) If I was Sam Bradford, I am wondering if I should have gone pro this year.

Rob Niedermayer Signs

ICE minority owner Rob Niedermayer has signed a 1-year deal with New Jersey. Rob has been staying in shape by being a regular at Kootenay ICE practices.
I think he was hoping to stay in the West Conference but at least he gets to be on a contender by joining the Devils.
Remember the Stanley Cup finals when Scott and the Devils beat Rob and the Ducks in a 7 game series?

10 Things I Think I Think

10 Things I Think I Think is a creation of SI NFL writer Peter King. His Monday Morning Quarterback articles every week are must read for all football fans at si.com. In a tribute to him, which is a nice way of saying I stole his concept, here is my 10 for the week.

This weeks’ 10 things are all about the ICE.

1. I think the ICE will go as far as the goaltending will take them. Which can be said by all 22 WHL teams, but over the years the ICE have always seemed to have one of the top goalies in the division and sometimes in the league. Some nights the club will need the goalie to steal a game but most nights just don’t give up the bad goal and everything should be good. The club doesn’t seem to have enough scoring to giving the opposition freebies.
2. I think one of the club’s main goals is to find the right centre to play with Dustin Sylvester. Over the years it’s been guys like Ben Maxwell and Steve DaSilva who had the right chemistry. On opening weekend his linemates were Matt Fraser and Kevin King. Sly can create a lot of scoring chances on his own but to have consistent success he will need to find the right playmaker.
3. I think it’ll be fun to watch Brayden McNabb and Hayden Rintoul be the powerplay quarterbacks. Last year, at the age of 17, both went through growing pains in that role. Petr Senkerick will get a chance on the #2 unit.
4. I think the penalty-kill will be another key to the ICE success this year. Losing Andrew Bailey (dozen blocked shot per game), Ian Barteaux and Tylan Stephens, who all flourished on the PK, are big skates to fill.
5. I think attendance will be a topic around the WHL. The talk of recession all summer long has been lurking as hockey season approached. The ICE had their lowest opening night crowd since moving to the Rec-Plex. That being said, a big thanx to our clients for your continued support on the radio broadcast. The 26 features are sold out. Limited space is available for the regular commercials.
6. I think the ICE will wait a while, maybe a few months, before they fill their last overage spot. It’’ll be a combination of what they feel is their biggest need and what’s available.
7. I think there will be a constant battle to make the game night roster for the 5th and 6th spots on the blueline. Looks like McNabb, Rintoul, Molle and Senkerik are the top 4. Then it’s, in no particular order, Machacek, Martin, Leach and Paulsen. The competition to play should make the team better.
8. I think there is also a battle for the forwards. Unless there is an injury, Skrudland, Hurley and Pearce may rotate for the 12th forward spot. As coach Holick said on the weekend, what you do in practice is as a factor as to who plays and doesn’t play.
9. I think a concern going into the season was who was going to replace Barteaux’s physical presence. Recently the ICE haven’t the leagues’ toughest player but seemed to be okay as far as overall team toughness was concerned. In the opening weekend the club was involved in 11 fights. Czerwonka, Montgomery and Machacek had 2 each. Toughness isn’t just about the fights, it’s the commitment to physical play and the willing to do it every night.
10. I think these are my non-hockey thoughts.
a) It’s the House season premiere tonight. It’s a 2-hour episode and reviews say it’s good enough to be a movie.
b) Love the mobile internet key for the laptop. Able to access the internet while on the bus. Plus when I had problems in the Red Deer arena, I just used the key and was able to access the internet. Talk about having no stress. Keep the comments coming at jeff@thedrivefm.ca.
c) The baseball playoffs should start tomorrow. I’m already moving towards following the NFL. Nothing left to decide in the playoff races.
d) Available October 20th, Peter King “Monday Morning Quarterback” the book.

Red Deer 7 Kootenay 1 Game #2

The Kootenay ICE went from a 8-1 win on Friday to a 7-1 loss on Saturday.
Message from both games was if you show up and compete, good things will happen. Don't and it won't be pleasant.
Brayden McNabb scored the only goal from Hayden Rintoul and Dustin Sylvester. All 3 players had points in both weekend games. Rintoul had 5 assists in the 2 games.
Shots were 50-15.
PP chances were 11-3.
Rebels also had 4 5-on-3 power-plays.
ICE will host Edmonton on Wednesday.

ICE Trivia Game #2

During every ICE broadcast we ask a trivia question.

Today’s Trivia question.

Red Deer had the 1st overall pick in the 2008 Bantam Draft and selected Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Twice in their history the ICE picked 1st overall, who did they select?

The game marked the debut for Lethbridge’s new Head Coach/GM Rich Preston who coached in the WHL with Regina in 95-97. The last 12 years he has been a NHL Assistant Coach with Calgary and San Jose.

Because of renovations at their home rink Lethbridge is starting the season with 8 straight road games. Their 1st home game is October 9th.
Saturday they visit Medicine Hat.

The game marked the beginning of the 14th year of the ICE Franchise and their 12th in Cranbrook.
On opening night the ICE have a record of 8-4-2.
And on home openers’ the ICE record is 9-3-2.

McNabb Is Back And Will Play

The Buffalo Sabres have sent defenseman Brayden McNabb back to the Kootenay ICE. He is the 3rd and final player to return from NHL camps. He is in tonight's line-up.

ICE Host Lethbridge Tonight

The Kootenay ICE will start a new season tonight.
This is the first of 6 meetings between the clubs, last year they split their 6-game series.
Exhibition stats don’t mean a thing but just so you know the ICE won 3 of the 4 preseason games and Lethbridge was winless. Both teams used extremely young line-ups.
Both clubs are affected by NHL camps as the ICE are without Brayden McNabb. Hurricanes will be missing Brennan Yadlowski, Kyle Beach and Carter Ashton.
Since moving to Cranbrook the ICE have won 7 of 11 home openers with 2 losses and 2 ties. Last year the ICE beat Spokane on opening night.
Because of renovations on their home building Lethbridge is starting the year with 8 straight home games.
The ICE will be displaying a new look with their new uniforms. But their will be familiar faces with 18 players who played games with the ICE last year on the roster.
There is a lot of optimism with the ICE as they made trades last year to get younger and still found success. Now everyone is a year older and expectations are always to make the playoffs and that doesn’t change this year.

The Pre-Game Show is at 6:30 on The Drive.

ICE New Jerseys A Closer Look

Baseball Stadium Feasibility Study Underway

I was lucky enough to be in the early discussions of getting a baseball stadium in Cranbrook and here is an update on the Home Run Society.

The Home Run Society today announced the awarding of their
baseball stadium feasibility study contract to GEC Architecture, who
bring with them over 40 years of experience in developing world class
recreation facilities. GEC is a Calgary-based architectural company
which provides expertise in programming, feasibility studies, and the
design and the development of recreational facilities.

"We are extremely pleased to have retained the services of GEC
Architecture," said Garry Slonowski, President of the Home Run
Society. "They have a proven track record of expertise in recreation
planning and the development of world class facilities."

Some of the notable highlights of GEC's experience are the Pengrowth
Saddledome, Calgary Olympic Speed Skating Oval, and the highly
acclaimed Armstrong-Spallumcheen Arena which was a throwback to an
all-wood design. GEC also has a wealth of experience in master
recreation plans and feasibility studies for clients such as Medicine
Hat, Banff, Canmore, Canada Olympic Park and Max Bell Arena.

"When we started researching companies who could provide this service,
GEC was always at the top of our list," continued Slonowski. "We were
very impressed with the work they recently did for the proposed
Medicine Hat Arena. In fact, the deliverables of our study were
modelled upon the work they did on that study. We felt it was very
thorough and provided a good tool to determine the design,
construction, and operation of a facility that would meet that
community's current and future needs."

The Home Run Society originally proposed the new baseball stadium in a
presentation to Cranbrook City Council in February. The presentation
outlined the goals of the society and provided the rationale for a
building new baseball stadium for Cranbrook.

"A new stadium could open a lot of doors for our community," said
Slonowski. "Whether it's a new franchise or hosting International
tournaments, we feel the community would benefit both intrinsically
and economically."

"We really admire the Okotoks model. They have done an excellent job
in all areas - from building a premiere stadium, right through to
developing a special relationship between the community and their
franchise. They package an exciting product with between-inning
promotions and a first class baseball experience. The games are a
can't miss event for the entire community, and they average over 1500
fans per game."

The feasibility study is scheduled to be conducted throughout the
Winter with the outcomes to be presented to Cranbrook City Council by
GEC Architecture in the Spring.

The funding for the study was provided through the Columbia Basin
Trust Community Initiatives program, which has been instrumental in
helping to move the development process forward.

"We would like to sincerely thank the City of Cranbrook and the
Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) in the support of our goals," said
Slonowski. "It has made a big difference in our project moving from
concept towards reality."

"We would also love to hear from anybody who is interested in
providing their input and experiences on what is needed in a new
community facility. Although it would primarily be used for baseball,
we have always envisioned that the facility could be used for other
activities such as Canada Day celebrations or outdoor concerts. It
would be an absolutely incredible setting for other community
activities."

Kootenay 5 Lethbridge 3 Exhibition Game #2

The Kootenay ICE played their 2nd game of the preseason against Lethbridge in a game that was played in the Crowsnest Pass and won by a 5-3 score.

- Brendan Hurley on a slap shot from the circle dot that went in off the top of the goalies pad.
- Tyler Vanscourt with a high wrist shot that beat the screened netminder.
- Hurley, with his 2nd, pounced on rebound to get the eventual game winner. Hurley had a chance to get a hat-trick by was stopped on a penalty shot.
- Joey Leach wristed a shot from the top of the circle and deflected of something and went in.

Hurricanes 1st goal was something from bizzaro world as the ICE were operating in the attacking zone on a power-play. The ICE pulled their goalie as there as a delayed penalty waiting to be called. The ICE attempted a shot at the Lethbridge blueline, but it was blocked in the shin pads and somehow rolled all the way into the ICE open net.
The 3rd Lethbridge goal was actually knocked in by a high stick, but it was ICE players' stick that put it in.

Fights –
1st period Cason Machacek vs Derek Ryckman. With the automatic game misconduct both teams were down to 5 defensemen the rest of the game.

ICE Trade With Swift Current

Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the Club has acquired overage defenseman Ryan Molle from the Swift Current Broncos in exchange for Kootenay’s fourth round pick in the 2010 WHL Bantam Draft.

“This trade gives us additional depth on our blue line and should take some pressure off the 1991 and 1992 group of defensemen. Ryan is a three year veteran of the WHL and that experience and leadership will be key for our Hockey Club,” commented Chynoweth.

With today’s transaction the ICE now have two 20-year-olds on their roster and are carrying 33 players (four goalies, ten defensemen and 19 forwards).

Ryan Molle will be arriving in Cranbrook tomorrow in time for practice at 11:45 am.
