Kootenay 4 Kelonwa 2 Game #60

Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE defenseman James Martin scored the winner on a 3rd period powerplay in a 4-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets in WHL action on Tuesday night.

The 1st period was scoreless and the last time the ICE were involved in a 0-0 tie after 1 period was January 12th in Edmonton.

Early in the 2nd period the ICE opened the scoring as Hayden Rintoul put the puck towards the net and it hit Kelowna players’ leg and deflected into the net.
Midway through the period Luke Paulsen was run into the boards and left the game with an injured shoulder and did not return.
Late in the period the ICE scored on a powerplay as Brayden McNabb slap shot from the point beat the goalie high on the glove side.

Early in the 3rd period the Rockets points shot was stopped by the goalie and players crashed the crease and Geordie Wudrick got his team leading 33rd.
Then few minutes later the Rockets tied the game on the powerplay as defenseman Kevin Smith was near the crease and banged in a rebound.
ICE regained the lead on the powerplay as Jesse Ismond fed James Martin at the back door and scored with a wrist shot over the sprawling goalie.
ICE took a 4-2 lead as Cody Eakin used his speed to cut around the Rockets defense and was stopped in close and Matt Fraser was there to lift in the rebound.

The ICE set a season high with 24 shots on goal in the 3rd period and surpassed 50 shots on goal in a game for the 2nd time this season.

The last time Kelowna was in Cranbrook was October 5/08.
The players who played in that game and tonights’ game were …
ICE (8) – Hayden Rintoul, Brayden McNabb, Steele Boomer, Kevin King, Drew Czerwonka, Max Reinhart, Joe Antilla, Nathan Lieuwen.
Rockets (4) – Tyson Barrie, Evan Bloodoff, Spencer Main, Mitchell Callahan.

Kelowna coach Ryan Huska and Kootenay Assistant Coach Todd Johnson were roommates with the Memorial Cup Champion Kamloops Blazers in 1992.
ICE Head Coach Kris Knoblauch is taking a similar coaching career path to Ryan Huska. 4 years ago Huska was an Assistant Coach to the Rockets and when they were looking for a new Head Coach there was some debate to Huska having no coaching experience but he still got the job. This summer Knoblauch contacted Huska on advice from going from an Assistant to Head Coach with the same team.

Since the last time the ICE played the Rockets in Cranbrook, the ICE have played against the Red Deer Rebels 22 times.
ICE will visit Red Deer on Wednesday.

ICE Scratches – Joey Leach (15th game ankle day-to-day), Brock Montgomery (1st game pelvis 2 weeks).
Leach skated on Tuesday for the 1st time in over a month and everything went great. His return to the line-up is not too far away.

41-seconds later the Pats took a 2-0 lead as Chandler Stephenson was in the middle shot and his wrist shot beat the goalie along the ice low on the stick side. The puck hit the corner of the post and came out quickly. Video replay did not overturn the ref’s call that it was a goal.

In the 2nd period the ICE scored as Brayden McNabb’s slap pass from the blueline was deflected high into the net by Kevin King.
While shorthanded the ICE tied the game 2-2 as Cody Eakin came down the left wing and scored with a shot high on the glove side. It’s his 3rd shorthanded goal in his 9th game with the ICE.
The ICE took the lead on a powerplay as Kevin King was wide open in the left circle and his wrist shot beat the goalie high on the stick side.
Late in the period Jagger Dirk was deep in his own zone and passed to the Regina blueline to Matt Fraser who stepped across the line and scored with a wrist shot that went through the goalie.

In the 3rd period the ICE scored on the powerplay as James Martin’s waist high point shot was deflected into the net by Jesse Ismond.
King completed the hat trick on the powerplay as he was in the low slot and redirected a Cody Eakin shot.
Regina scored 2 goals 3 minutes apart in the 3rd period to make the score 6-4.
On a delayed penalty Nils Moser got a loose puc near the net and lifted it into the net.
3 minutes later Jordan Weal fed Andrew Reider in he slot and his shot beat the goalie low on the stick side.

Kootenay 5 Vancouver 2 Game #54

Cranbrook, BC – Kootenay ICE forward Cody Eakin scored twice in a 5-2 win over the Vancouver Giants in WHL action on Saturday night.

ICE opened the scoring as Joe Antilla knee-high point shot was deflected by Cody Eakin.
Vancouver received 4 straight powerplays including 2 long 2-man advantages and scored on one of them to tie the game 1-1. Michael Burns got the goal as he squeezed a rebound behind the goalie’s reaching leg.

On the opening faceoff of the 2nd period Cody Eakin broke through the defense to create a shorthanded breakaway and scored with a wrist shot through the legs.
It’s his 2nd shorthanded goal of the season and the 11th by the ICE.
The goal came 7-seconds at the beginning of the period which is a franchise record. (old record 8-seconds December 18, 1998 Steve McCarthy in Red Deer)
The ICE took a 3-1 lead on the powerplay as Max Reinhart fed James Martin at the blueline and his wrist shot from the point beat the screened goalie high on the stick side.

In the 3rd period the Giants got within a goal as Andre Stastny was left alone in front of the net and chipped the puck over the goalie’s leg.
The ICE regained the 2-goal lead off a face-off win the Giants zone and Matt Fraser got the puck to Hayden Rintoul who got his wrist shot through the goalies’ legs.
ICE scored on a powerplay as Kevin King from the corner fed Matt Fraser in the slot and he scored with a wrist shot through the goalies legs.
Vancouver changed goalies as Brendan Jensen replaced Mark Segal.

ICE will host Regina on Tuesday.

16-year-old defenseman Jeff Hubic played in his 1st WHL game.

The crowd was the biggest of the season.

Interesting Stat – ICE record when playing their 2nd game in 2 nights.
In the 1st half of the season they went 8-2-0-0. Both losses were actually their 3rd game in 3 nights.
So far in the 2nd half of the season they are 1-5-0-0.
They will play in that situation 7 more times this season.

The last time Vancouver was in Cranbrook was January 9, 2009.
Vancouver won the game 4-1 with the only ICE goal scored by John Negrin.
The next day was the WHL trade deadline and the ICE traded Negrin and Michael Stickland to Swift Current for Christian Magnus, James Martin and 2 draft picks.
ICE players in that game that are still with the ICE are Hayden Rintoul, Brayden McNabb, Matt Fraser, Kevin King, Jesse Ismond, Drew Czerwonka, Max Reinhart, Joe Antilla and Nathan Lieuwen.
Giants players in the last game that are still on the club are Neal Manning, Brendan Gallagher and James Henry.

ICE Scratches – Luke Paulsen (5th game concussion 1 week), Steele Boomer (9th game ankle 2 weeks), Joey Leach (9th game ankle surgery 3-4 weeks), Mackenzie Skapski.
Giants Darren Bestland didn’t play after receiving a charging major on Friday in Calgary and was suspended by the league.
