Edmonton 9 Kootenay 0 Playoff Game #1

Edmonton, Alb – Edmonton Oil Kings forward Stephane Legault had 3 first period goals and 3 second period assists in a 9-0 win over the Kootenay ICE in game 1 of their 1st round Playoff series in WHL action on Friday.

Legault finished the game with 7 points.

In the first period the Oil Kings got a hat-trick from Stephan Legault and singles from Travis Ewanyk and Trevor Cheek to take a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The ICE changed goalies to start the second with Wyatt Hoflin replacing Mackenzie Skapski.

In the second period the Oil Kings added to their lead with goals from Michael St. Croix, Cody Corbett on a 2-man advantage and a powerplay goal by Keegan Lowe.

In the third period Trevor Cheek scored the last goal of the game.

It’s the 8th time the ICE have been shutout in a playoff game.
The last time was game 1 in Edmonton last season.

The only other time the ICE have given up more than 7 goals against in a playoff game was Apr 2/99 in Calgary in an 8-3 loss.
The loss was the largest margin of defeat in ICE playoff history with the previous record of 5.
Mar 20/09 in Brandon 7-2, Apr 9/03 vs Seattle 5-0, Apr 2/99 in Calgary 8-3.

There were 10 ICE players who played in their 1st WHL Playoff game – Mackenzie Skapski, Wyatt Hoflin, Matt Thomas, Kyle O’Connor, Collin Shirley, Austin Vetterl, Hudson Elynuik, Jakub Prochazka, Tanner Faith and Landon Peel.

The ICE will visit Edmonton on Sunday in game 2 of their 1st round playoff series.
